Mata Kurlu JV (MKJV) was formed in 2016 at the request of Newcrest Mining who had observed the success of NEMMS JV and were looking to replicate the model in the Western Desert.
The JV is active in the Western Desert Communities with strong local recruitment and employment evident on the Telfer project, which routinely achieves circa 40% Indigenous employment utilising this “local first” strategy.
MKJV is actively seeking additional opportunities in the region in order to build a sustainable business that can further expand its impact in the local communities.
The mineral and hydrocarbon endowment of the region is beginning to reveal itself through the significant regional exploration effort currently underway, with MKJV well placed to acquire work into the future.

Our story starts in the dreaming time and shows the songline the desert people would use to travel from soak to soak…
The inspiration for our logo reflects the footsteps of our old people through the sandy desert, where the song-lines would show them the tracks to waterholes or soaks. Mata Kurlu comes from our Traditional Owners’ mothers country and describes the soaks locations.
These dreamtime maps showed the mob the precious water sources that sustained the survival of the Martu people and the “warnapari” or dingo shown in our logo. These water places were crucial to survival and we are very proud to still carry the song-lines to these special places.
As we move forward our goal is to give back to the Martu people, enabling employment and business opportunities that allow for the dreaming stories to continue to future generations. This enables Martu to remain strong in lore, culture and social responsibilities but also participate in the wider economic opportunities that are available to the Martu community.
Having Martu participate in the general economic opportunities and remain in their home communities supports the process of self-determination and we will be working hard to deliver these visions and outcomes for Mata Kurlu and Matu peoples.
